logging out problem

I just started using Linux in an Universitynetwork and while "playing" little, I accidently closed all windows from an account and therefor couldn't find a way to logout properly. I heard there is a command to kill an open account from another terminal. But how do you do this???

I do not understand how you can get into this situation, but
<CTRL><ALT><BACKSPACE> should kill and restart the X-server. Then you can login again.
