Logging into Linux machien remotely with graphical interface

Pardon me guys, I dont understand anything about this stuff, so please be patient.

OK I have a Redhat machine and a Windows Millenium machine. My redhat machine is connected to the internet at work and my Windows box is at home.

I want to log into the Redhat machine on my Windows box, but instead of just getting a command line, I want to be able to use the GUI on the Redhat machine. In other words, I want to see the screen on my Windows box just like I had loaded up the GUI on Redhat.

1) Is this what X windows does?

2) I have a program called XFree86 installed on the Redhat box. Will this work?

if you log in to a command line, say thruogh ssh, and issue startx command likely it will crash your terminal. Instaed, you'll want to set up a VNC server on the redhat machine, and a VNC client on the windows box, and use that to log in by specifying the redhat ip address.
