Logging in via putty redirects back to the login prompt screen (Linux Fedora 8)

Hello Guys,
I am using Fedora 8 linux on virtual machine.
Till last day I can login to this server via putty with Root credentials without any issue.
Now suddenly I keep getting redirected to the login prompt screen after i input my root password. I input it over and over, and it always send me back to the login command prompt screen instead of logging me in and that is without any error.
Can anyone help me with this issue?
I am not an advanced user so if you can please detail your help, I would much appreciate. Thank you all for your time and patience!

Note: I am having only one user i.e. root user and in fedora having only command prompt(NO GUI).

Spande

Fedora 8 is a bit outdated. Is there any particular reason you chose Fedora 8? Did you view the logs in Fedora and Windows to see if your getting an error on either side?

Do you have another way to access the virtual machine besides PuTTY (console from the parent system?), so you can check if the root password still works?

My suggested steps would be:
1. Check if the root password still works
2. Check /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog to see if there's anything logged their for your failed SSH attempts that might explain why they're failing
3. If all else fails, restart sshd in case it's gotten weird and is just banning all logins. If you can't log in to restart sshd, reboot the machine and that will force a restart of sshd.
