Angry Log out problem with mandrake 9.1

I'm a total newbe with linux. Started up two days ago with mandrake 9.1. Everything is going well so far except that every time I log out, shutdown or restart ether from gnome or kde, my monitor turn black (sleep mode?) and i can't do anything else than shutdown or restart by pushing the button on the computer case.
Thanks for your help and advises.

This might be a silly question but does your computer support switching off the computer power by software*? Unlike Windows Linux does not give you a 'safe to switch off' graphic, so maybe the computer is as off as it gets without pushing the button.

*Even if it does it might be disabled in BIOS.
