Log off when playing video files in Ubuntu 11.04

I am not able to play video file using totem, vlc or smplayer. Vlc opens and plays files but if I try to maximize or another command the system logs off, a pop up appears giving me a message about CUPS and battery check(ok). After that I am able to log in again.
I am using Ubuntu 11.04(GNU/Linux) 2.6.38-11-generic i686.
Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

I followed this link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome
and after sudoedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf the terminal posts GNU nano 2.2.6 File: /var/tmp/xorgXXUPjNtU.conf Modified
This solved my problem.

If you make another user account, and log in with that account, does the behavior continue then? If not it could be a user-specific problem.
