Unhappy Lockup when starting X (on compaq armada)

I'm running rh9 on a compaq armada m700 and am generally happy with my installation except for one really annoying thing. When X starts, everything freezes for a while (at least 20 seconds, sometimes even more than a minute!) . During the freezing, some of the leds on my laptop (keyboard etc.) blink several times. After that, either everythings works fine (in most cases) or I have to restart X because my mouse will not function.
I think this is a known problem. See the bugreport at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=109516
I was wondering whether anyone knew a quick way around this problem. I'm a newbie and i don't thikn i'm up yet for rebuilding a kernel. I tried upgrading XFree86, but i get all sorts of conflicts and gave up in the end. So what is a newbie to do?
thanks
rick
