locate stopped?

I'am wondering what this is, to what I recall, it never did this before, there was a power outage recently, but I really didn't think it did anything since I can still search for most all things, but it seems some things are finished, even after i updatedb.

[19]+ Stopped locate a
root@computer:/#

any help?

please?

was trying to find where my ftp server program was, proftpd.

"was trying to find where my ftp server program was, proftpd."

If locate doesn't work try using the find and which commands instead. See:
man find
man which

Well, if the power-outage occured during a
updatedb your (s)locate database might be
corrupted ... if you ave a sensible /etc/updatedb.conf
try
Code:

locate slocate\.db | xargs rm
updatedb -c

to re-create it

I just checked for root kits and such, have slackware 9.0, and a kernal of 2.4.21..or 2.4.22..either way. Could this have something to do it...anyway

...

it said a few files were infected, i'am on another computer currently. thinking of taking my music and such files off and reinstalling...

any help would be great :)

Ouuuuuch.... sorry about the root-kit thing.
How did you catch it?

What particular help do you need? What kind of
info are you after?

not sure too much...i have my computer disconnected currently...i think i need to go get some new CDs and such...than ..well..one thing

how do i figure out what partition are where, and what to format? i suppose i could just search around for the info, ill post back here about it when i figure my next course of action about this case.

thanks btw, feel free to bug me and tell me im doing everything wrong :D

new to linux ... for a few months now ... tried it several times before ... but i ended up giving up ... but this time it has just stuck to me and worked beautifully :).

and about the root-kit...im unsure where i got it, im thinking a vulnerability...considering i havent downloaded anything really...i already changed all my passwords..so im not sure if im safe yet...thanks.

Try a locate -u as root, that should fix your locate problems.

fdisk -l

Will list the partitions, you can use fdisk to format them, but there are better programs out there. parted I think is the best. It has more checks to not currupt your parition table, and is much safer and more flexible.

my icon started to go missing and i cant run the root-kit script anymore to find it...it said something about a "romanian root-kit" thats all i remember

Reminder about handling security issues

I regularly search LQ's other fora to detect situations like these. Unfortunately I can't find all of them or find them as fast as I would like. For properly handling these I need the help from any member who stumbles across a situation that sounds fishy. When there is doubt, suspicion of or when someone indicates malicious activity please refer them to the Linux - Security forum, or send me an email directly.

If you do not have the knowledge to deal with it, then please DON'T.

If you want to learn about what to do with situations like these, try reading
the LQ FAQ: Security references, post #1 "Basics, important sites, HOWTO's", the "Compromise, breach of security, detection" part and post #5 "Forensics, recovery, undelete", the "Forensics HOWTO's, docs" part, before you offer suggestions.

Jalalabee 12-21-2003 08:59 AM

At first I really didn't think this was a security issue. I just figured I screwed something up or whatever. Until other things seemed out of place.

I think this conversation has pretty much moved to the security forum.
