Localhost login fails

I have a Mandrake 9.2 server thats main purpose is to run an Apache intranet site and a MySQL database.

The system has been up for about a month running in KDE. I changed an option in KDE so that it wouldn't boot to the GUI anymore (I perfer the console only on servers). I rebooted the server today and it comes up with the following:

login:

When I type in "root" and then enter my root password, it comes up saying it is not valid.

HOWEVER,

when I hit escape at the Mandrake screen, type in "Linux Single" and boot into the Mainteance (sp?) mode, or whatever it is called, I can enter in my root password and it takes.

I tried editing the inittab file, changing the 3 to a 5. Now I am getting X-server startup errors and a blank screen. I can still get to the login prompt, but I can't login.

I don't have a problem reinstalling (I have 10.2 now anyway) but how do I get my SQL database info and my Apache info off?

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan
