local address confusion
 
i just ran netstat -an and all of the local addresses listed are 0.0.0.0:21
0.0.0.0:23

etc.

but when i run ifconfig everything looks right. how do i fix this? i can't telnet to my machine, and i think this may be why.

Look if you have set localhost in /etc/hosts.
