Loadlin to boot up usb hdd?

I've installed Mandrake 10.0 on a usb 2.0 hard drive. I was thinking I would try to use Loadlin to boot it up. As I understand, I have to mount the usb drive with SCSI emulation. Can anyone tell me how exactly I would do this? Or is there a better or simpler way. The BIOS does not support USB hdd boot.

I've attempted running loadlin off of a cd-rw but at the end of the string it read:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sda" or unknown - block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

All I can tell from this is that it is not seeing the "root" on the drive. I have the usb drive connected through a pci usb 2.0 card. I understand this can make it more difficult. Can anyone tell me how to make loadlin see the drive and what parameters I would have to add. I am new to this and know next to nothing of programming.
