loading X Windows
I've just installed Red Hat 9 on a virtual machine and it prompts me:
localhost login: How do I load the X Windows? |
Well what desktop are you going to be running?
Kdm for kde, GDM for gnome, or XDM which will just launch xwindows. May i ask why your using redhat 9? That is a dated linux distro and you would be better off running fedora, a more updated redhat release. |

1) The installer was unable to detect your graphics adapter 2) When Red Hat boots in the virtual machine, it does not switch to VT7, which is where the graphical login will be Did you get a graphical login when you installed Red Hat? Or was it character (ncurses) based? I'm not a virtual machine expert, but if your underlying video adapter hardware is relatively new, and your virtual machine software cannot emulate an older adapter, Red Hat 9 may not recognize it. See if there are any settings in your virtual machine software for emulating video hardware. |

Redhat installation
I tried using startx however, an error was displayed:
-bash: startx: command not found Do I have to switch to another mount or path before running this command? The interface loaded was text based actually, however a GUI was loaded during the installation, which tells me that the video card driver was installed at some point. It could be that the video card (or some other driver) did not work when the OS was loaded. I'll try re-installing. I was using RedHat 9, because Fedora was not successfully installed on the virtual machine due to some PM_Timer bug. The idea is to try installing Oracle 11g on RedHat because there were some problems with OWB when installing it on Windows. Any ideas? |
