Loading KDE in Debian

I am new to linux and have just finished loading Debian. I used gdm instead of kdm. How do I switch it to kdm from the command line. From what I've read Debian is packaged with KDE. I would like to use KDE but I'm not sure how to go about it. Any help would be great. Thanks..

Try to do a:
sudo apt-get install kdm

and maybe you have to move your ~/.xsession to ~/.xsession.bac

Choosing KDM

An easier way is to use dpkg.

su to root and type:

$ dpkg-reconfigure xdm

then pick the display manager you want from the list (provided you have more than one installed).

You can also start kde like this if you donīt want a login manager: make a file called .xinitrc in your home directory, and type this in it: exec startkde

Now when you startx it should go straight to kde. If you want to disable this just delete the .xinitrc file. Note that you shouldnīt startx as root or it will load the whole kde as root (which isnīt a good idea )

edit: if you want to do this then you of course should remove kdm/xdm from your boot services since you will be starting kde from command line mode.

Thanks for the replies. I will give them a try. Does anyone have any suggestions on Debian/Linux Documentation or Books that might be helpful?? Thanks again.
