Loading Drivers in Ubuntu
 

G'day. My name is Dave and I have just loaded Ubunto on my computer as a dual boot with Windows XP. I want to know how to get my ADSL modem to work together with my printers and my webcam. I have no idea how Linux works and would welcome any input. I have just joined this site in order to increase my Knowledge and subsequent usage of Linux. Feel free to email me on 81143@lizzy.com.au with any assistance. I should point out that my modem is connected by a USB port and I have tried to install all drivers mentioed above but Ubuntu would not allow me to load the drivers............Dave

Many thanks to those of you who replied with suggested websites etc. I now have a printer up and running and am working on getting my Lexmark "All in one" to work. It looks as if I will need a modem with ethernet capabilities to connect to the net. Although this is a nice challenge, I am wondering if it is worth all the extra work..............Dave

This may be useless since you may have already tried:

Is the Lexmark a printer all in one?

If so download the appropriate driver ( by searching say, via google )

and then on the menu somewhere you find: Administration > printing.


click on it, go on new printer, and if it's a local printer then it should have it on the list, select it, continue, and when it displays the drivers, MAKE SURE that the right company and all is selected ( since normally it doesn't do that ), if it's not on the list get the driver you downloaded earlier by going on the "new driver" or "load driver" ( whatever ) button and find it.

Unless it's tar.gz format or another archive format, just select it and the program does the rest.

Note also that when using linux, it is best to have the device attached to your computer when booting, because that way it loads it.

If your system doesn't have ethernet built in or you are unable to add a one, there are usb to ethernet adaptors available. Just google usb to ethernet adaptors.
