Load SuSE without KDE

I'm trying to install vmware tools on SuSE v8.2, running as VMWare virtual machine (guest system)

VMTools are going to replace some parts of the kernel and required to be launched while XFree is not running. How to quit KDE or launch without it?

Easiest way, as I see it, is this:
Load YaST
Click System > Runlevel Editor
Select "Expert Mode"
Change default runlevel from "5: Full multiuser with network and xdm" to "3: Full multiuser with network"

You'll reboot into a terminal...when you're finished doing what you need to do, type "startx" to return to X and KDE.
