I started to try the codes but stopped after the first one because I thought it was interesting what it displayed

Quote:
Current boot codes:
BOOT_IMAGE=/antiiX/vmlinuz boot=usb intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 xorg=safe video=1024x769
"possibly unknown or misspelled boot codes...boot=usb
Loading hardware specific modules
Scan usb,cd devices. Look for boot file(s) antiX/linuxfs
Segmentation fault
/init: line 277: can't open /LAST_BP_TIME: no such file
It seems boot=usb is not recognised and then there is the segmentation fault.

I got as far as downloading Ubuntu Cleaner but I can't find it -- it's in the Download folder. Also, I'm wary of trying it on my desktop.

Hi colorpurple,
Thought I would update you. Gone through them all at least once. Now I am trying different permutations. Completed the first two.

Note: the very FIRST TIME I TRIED NO.1 i GOT THE MENU AND ICONS and THE CURSOR WAS ALIVE. But WHEN I TRIED TO MOVE IT IT MOVED AND THEN FROZE. I could never get back that display.

I think the problem lies with the Notebook. For example I now display duplica"tes of each USB, like "Scandisk, "Scandisk" although there is no "Scandisk" present and then "Transcend" and Transcend Partition 1" so something is acting up.

I think the next move must be to clean up the registry or whatever before trying new permutations. I downloaded Ubuntu cleaner and cleaned up my PC and laptop but I don't know how to use it on the Notebook since I can't download it to directly to the Notebook. Although I used Ubuntu Cleaner I couldn't find the file on my system! I wonder if just copying it to a USB would work.

Over the next few days I'll try permutations of numbers 2 to 5. What troubles me is that if I get a result with one of the five equations but then try another one I sometimes cannot repeat the earlier results when I try again.

RenH,

Your Asus 203NA is a hybrid (32/64-bit) machine just like my Asus T100T and famous for the missing bootia32.efi file.

The good news is that MX-21.3 64 bit ISO will solve your problem, just like it solved mine.

Pick the relevant bits from here and you should be up and running shortly:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...d-linux-38954/

You have already disabled Secure Boot.

NB You must activate the wifi in MX before using the MX installer.

You probably need to use GParted to format the eMMC drive as GPT (see screenshot on the blog) with 4 resized partitions.

There is sometimes a warning in red that the boot partition must be a certain minimum size.

That is why I created the following:

emmcp1: 500MB ESP partition formatted as FAT32 and flagged as esp/boot.

emmcp2: 10GB root partition formatted as ext4.

emmcp3: 500MB linux-swap

emmc4: Rest of drive formatted as ext4 for home partition.

Do make sure that the MX USB installation drive (sda) does not have any partitions selected (leave them blank) when partitioning the eMMC drive.

Before applying the partitioning, click on “Show details” and make sure only the 4 eMMC drive partitions (ESP, root, swap & home) are active.

Also, make sure that GRUB is installed on the ESP partition.

Happy installing!

RenH,

Thanks for your message.

Create a new bootable USB drive using MX-21.3.

Insert this drive and keep tapping the Esc key after powering up. This will bring up the Boot Menu. Select USB.

Select MX-21.3.

Then separately select, language, keyboard and timezone.

Next, at the bottom of the options list, is "Return to beginning" or similar. Click on that.

Do NOT click on the Install icon.

On the left-hand side, between the speaker/sound icon and the paperclip icon is the network icon (see attached screenshot).

Click on this and you should be asked for your wifi key. Type it and press Enter.

Once that is confirmed as connected, click on Install.

Another alternative is, first of all, to boot from a GParted USB drive and partition the eMMC drive as GPT with the 4 partitions sized as I suggested.

Then boot from the MX-21.3 USB drive, connect the wifi and install MX-21.3.

Hi beachboy2
Well, I did what you suggested and made a new Live USB with MX-23. I downloaded balenaEtcher--it worked well once I understood how to use it. I discovered that my other live USB with MX-23 was functioning as it brought me to the same place. I checked off "language, keyboard and timezone". and then returned to the main menu, except it wanted to start MX-23. There was NO speaker/sound icon OR paperclip icon AND NO network icon ... I tried looking for it but no dice.

I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what. Also I didn't divide my USB into 4 partitions but just one because I was having trouble with GParted. If there is a way of screwing up I'm sure to find it!

RenH,

You appear to be able to boot from the GParted USB drive, so do the following:

1. Using GParted, format the drive as GPT for UEFI:

Gparted > Device > Create Partition Table > Advanced > msdos > gpt> Apply.

2. Delete all existing partitions.

3. First, create an esp partition (500MB) formatted as FAT32, click on Apply. Leave the remainder of the drive as unallocated for now.

4. Next and most importantly, right-click on the fat32 partition > Manage flags > Select boot and esp.

Next, create 3 Primary partitions (not Logical) in the unallocated space as follows:

5. Create the root (system) partition (10GB) for Linux Mint. Format the Primary partition as ext 4.

6. Create a Primary swap partition (500MB) Do not format it. Do not use ext4. Use linux-swap.

7. Create the Primary home partition for the remainder of drive. Format the partition as ext 4.

8. Close GParted and boot from the MX-21.3 USB drive.

Beachboy2,
Before I do anything I want to check with you:

1. I am going to [re]format the live USB I made yesterday with BalenaEtcher. In making it I went as far as msdos. But I should now go a step further and select gpt.

2. Create the three primary partitions you listed. I hope this is self-evident. If there is a way of going wrong with gparted I am sure to find it!

3. Close Gparted. [All above is done on my PC]. Now do I remove the USB and use it to boot up the Notebook?

I apologise if the questions are dumb!

BeachBoy2,
Update to my last reply. I got in. I thought I would try the USB again and when I had the cursor on MX-23 the timer was ticking away. Previously I had always stopped it, but this time I let it tick down, and it booted up the menu, windmill, etc. But no WiFi. There was a message concerning the WiFi but it was so quick that I missed it. I am searching for a command to connect the WiFi.

BeachBoy2,
For a moment I brought up the WiFi but then by the time I found the password the Notebook hung. Will try again tomorrow. I have to press function-F2 for the WiFi.

RenH,

You appear to be making progress.

NB You need to make FOUR partitions! (see post #118)

The first and most important partition is the 500MB ESP (EFi System Partition) partition formatted as FAT32.

Don't forget to click on Apply.

Once you have created that partition, right click on it, click on Manage flags, then select boot and esp. Click on Apply.

Then you can create the 3 Primary partitions.

Click on Apply.

To shut down GParted:

Double-click the Exit icon in the upper left hand corner.

Select the Shutdown entry and click OK.

Remove GParted drive, insert MX-21.3 drive and boot from it.

Have your wifi key ready!

Beachboy2,
Sooo close.I was stuck on activating the WiFi this morning and the system hung. So this evening I retried -- had to start from the very beginning, but I think I did get the disk done and the partitions. Tried again to set up and got thew Wi-Fi working but then it froze again. Tried a third time but it froze before the Windmill screen was displayed.

I was re-reading your instructions and I am afraid I did NOT check for other partitions -- there would be the very small one at the beginning and end. Also I should have checked on 'details".

RenH,

You are definitely getting nearer to a solution.

I made the same mistake when I initially failed to spot that ESP was also highlighted on the installation drive as well as emmcp1.

The next time, I clicked on Show details, removed the offending item by leaving it empty and everything worked correctly.

Good luck!

I'm curious, are you still using the MX-21.3_February_x64.iso?
