live DVD problem

I just put together a simple little desktop with all intentions of using linux on it. I was wanting to try linux mint 12 as a permanent install. The only thing I can get to install is one of the many custom flavors of ubuntu 10.10. my system consists of a Biostar n68s3, an AMD Athlon x3, 4 gb of ddr 3 ram, and seagate 500gb drive. I use the on board audio and video. When I try to boot a live DVD either 32 or 64 bit it locks up in the middle of the boot. It shows the linux mint 12 splash screen and that is it . Also on my ubuntu HD install it locks up with the new kernal but I reset it and the GRUB menu comes up. I select the older kernal...-22.. and it boots fine.
I am not sure if there may be a driver issue for the mobo or what because the cd it came with only had Micro$haft drivers on it none for linux. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a nvidea video problem. That board has NVIDIA GeForce 7025 GPU.
Can you do a text install without graphics, then get the video support working?

Search Linux Questions and use google to find out what others have done to solve it. This is a fairly common problem.

UPDATE UPDATE
Thanks for the help it got me to thinking
I worked around the issue by formatting the HD and installing it in a pc that would take the live dvd
after that I installed the nvidia drivers and then reinstalled into the new pc
now the system has ubuntu 10.10 and blackbuntu as a dual boot
it will even take the geexbox live cd now
for some reason though the linux mint live dvd still wont boot right
some sort of kernal issue maybe?

Can you select visa for video or text to install?
Can you hit the space bar and make a compat mode selection?

I'd be looking at memtest and or setting bios to default. Seems more like a hardware issue.
