live cd w/flashplayer
 

I am looking for a “LIVE” cd distro that can play youtube videos.

I have tried knoppix and ubuntu with no success.

Is there such a thing?

Try Mint or PCLinuxOS or Sabayon.

just what i needed!

I had no problem installing flashplayer-mozilla, w32codecs, an mplayer upgrade, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, libxine1-ffmpeg, libdvdcss, etc, etc from debian-multimedia.org onto Knoppix 5.3.1 DVD. It uses a cool file system trick to enable installing stuff while running Live and have enough space to still operate. I just needed to add the source to /etc/apt/sources.lst.

Even though it's mostly an old version of Lenny the mixed nature needed the Etch debian-multimedia.org source (I think). It's been a while. I think using the Lenny repo required too much upgrading of packages, which isn't good on Knoppix since it's highly customized. If aptitude (please use aptitude keep-all first) wants to start uninstalling stuff like xmms you're using the wrong debian-multimedia repo.

If you have a USB stick you can save all the changes and boot up with the DVD but still keep everything you did before.

I know you already got something done, but Knoppix is fully capable of doing it too.

Knoppix has problems installing adobe flash 10 (only no. 9 works). However, pclinuxos does since last years version. Also the CD has an extra minute and 20 seconds of ata boot before the main boot. bummer

Well, that's one of the things I meant.

If you look at debian-multimedia.org packages you'll see that flashplayer-mozilla is 9.0.151 in his stable repo. When I was playing with setting up Knoppix Flash worked fine. You also wouldn't get Firefox/Iceweasel 3 either. So far no one has gotten that to work on Knoppix. Just Iceweasel 2, and the Etch security repo would offer the latest version of that.

Although much was dist-upgraded to lenny in Knoppix, most of the multimedia is still from Etch. I think Klauss did that because he still loves xmms and upgrading the multimedia stuff to Lenny versions would require removing that. After all he still designs Knoppix to be his own personal Live Linux system. So he made xmms fit! :)

So some of the stuff may be old, but all usable. And there is no Live DVD with as much software pre-installed as Knoppix has.

I assume they'll be another new release this year sometime. If you want up to date stuff now though, I suppose one of the other distro Live versions would be preferable.

I played with adjusting the sources.list and aptitude dist-upgrade using a USB stick to save it all. It does bring it up to date for most things but breaks some things in the process. It really isn't meant for such total redesigning. Just installing a few things here and there is okay. I had installed the NVidia drivers (from Sid at the time) and so had full 3D and Compiz Fusion going on it. But upgrading multimedia would break Compiz. Just installing matching Etch versions of multimedia codecs and players from debian-multimedia.org worked fine though.

Might anyone have any new thoughts or suggestions on this question?

Best option is to make a remastere(easy) that has flash and whatever installed into the compressed read-only filesystem.

I've used linux mint 7 before, It comes with flash and works great, but it isn't up to date flash so you have to upgrade it.

Most live cd's have flash installed.
