live cd and windows partition
 

I am studying from my CEH and I am trying to locate the hd on the livecd and I cannot, I am trying to move some files over. I DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL LINUX, just use the livecd to move files over. I have tried mandriva and opensuse and neither show me the hard drive. WHat OS will with just using the livecd?

Move files from where to where?

Most liveCDs I've used will show your hard drives and partitions, with generic names, on the desktop, such as hda1, hda2, hdb1, etc. It's up to you to mount them one-by-one to discover their contents.

If you want to move files from one partition to another, you must mount the target and object partitions in order to move files.

If you want to copy files from the liveCD to a partition, the target partition must be mounted before you can copy files from the cd.

If you want to copy/move files to the cd, you can't do it directly. You will have to unpack the .iso into a folder somewhere, add files to it, then re-make the .iso image.

CEH stands for certified ethical hacker. Now I tried opensuse before, where would the hard drive be on that?

If you want to know where your harddisk located, search in /mnt(It's known by hd0, hdc1, hdc2, etc). There will be a harddisk that has been detected by linux.

I checked mnt and there was nothing there for opensuse and mandriva. Elive you actually have to pay for, so what other linux OS will work that people have tried?

Any distro should work. The problem is not what you're using, but (most likely) that you've not mounted the partition, as alluded to above. Run "/sbin/fdisk -l" in a terminal (that's a lowercase L by the way) to see a list of partitions on your disks along with filesystems (and other info). That should help you work out what you need to mount.
