Listing Kernel parameters

Hi Folks!

Does anybody out there knows of a command that outputs the kernel's parameters?

Every time I need to check a parameter, I need to dive into the menuconfig and sometimes I get lost, and I must confess that I feel like trying to find something in windows' registry!!

I have seen here and there, a list showing all the parameters in plain ascii, which makes easier to send to someone or just to review some configuration, not to say that you can grep the thing.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

AL

Yes. In your kernel source tree, there is a file called .config (typically /usr/src/linux/.config). Additionally, if you compile in support for it, you can type 'zcat /proc/config.gz' and the currently-running kernel will give you all the options it was compiled with, in the same format as .config.

That's a great feature because I can upgrade kernels (generally) by running:
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux-NEWVERSION
zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
make oldconfig
make all modules modules_install install

Hi Matir, thanks a lot for your reply.

I just checked on my box, and I am affraid to tell you that I don't have any of the files you've mentioned.

I have searched all the fs without any success.

Sorry for not sending this before: RedHat 8.0 (2.4.18-14).

Once again, thanks a million.

You've built your own kernel, and don't have a .config file in the kernel source tree?

Thanks Matir,

Actually, it was built by the installer. I still don't know how to install a machine building my own kernel.

Well, would running menuconfig, saving and recompiling it do the trick?

Thanks in advance.

Even running menuconfig and saving it would produce a .config file -- but it may or may not match your running kernel.

I see, but for now, I don't have any other option than running the risk of having it reflecting my current kernel's configuration.

Will let you know (it may take a while, till I compare the output).

Anyway, you helped a lot Matir.

Thanks,

AL
