Thanks for the help. I will try what you suggest, in the mean time here are my computer specs: laptop is an hp 15, it has windows 8 on it and I installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. I know the ubuntu is pretty old- i am in the process of getting a newer version. So, if the computer had wifi with windows 8 would I still need an adaptor because linux doesn't have the hardware? Any advise you can offer will be helpful!
Thanks,
Lori
You should have a suffix code for the HP 15-xxxxxx(where x is 4-6 digit code) Laptop. That way we can see the laptop specifications for that particular model.
How to Ask Questions the Smart Way will help to compose your queries in the future so we can help analyze your issue(s).
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!
I highly recommend Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS . Couple of months ago I got a free HP desktop with a bogus Windows 7 install on it. I downloaded the iso image and burned it to a DVD read disk. Later, I got completely p--sd at Windows 7 on my HP Laptop and used the same Ubuntu DVD and installed. I am COMPLETELY happy with Ubuntu 14. Tke wireless even worked when I played with a Knoppix version of Linux and got on the Internet (wireless) on my laptop and desktop!!!
Distribution: Primarily Deb/Ubuntu, and some CentOS

I'm pretty sure HP laptops have Intel Wifi chips in them. If so, you should be fine with any newer Linux Kernel. Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, even Centos with it's 2.6xxxxxxxxx Kernel will probably still work.
It seems like lots of people have asked questions trying to get specific info your laptop to make a more educated suggestion, (ie. the model# of your laptop). But you still haven't answered. We're not mind readers. What is HP 15? There are probably 250 different models of HP laptops with 15" display. Also you say it had Ubuntu before. Did the wireless work when you had it on there?
Thanks for the help I have found a distro that has wireless that works on my computer.
Thanks again all.
It would be nice if you would provide more information. You were asked the complete model number for your HP Laptop. And now your feedback says you have solved this problem but fail to say which distribution chosen. LQ is here to help everybody by good interaction between members.
You came for help but when asked for specific information you fail to provide anything. One way doesn't work for us here at LQ. As a member you should actively participate and be polite by providing the requested information. In that way you will be helping fellow members that may experience the same issue(s). So please consider to start actively participating by communicating with members that have politely asked for you to expand your query by providing detailed information.
