Linux/XP dual boot problem
I run Fedora as a single OS but I also have an XP/Debian dual boot on another box - this was from my first attempt at installing linux about 6 months ago, and although Debian boots I can't start X (stuck with the command line).
I believe the problem stems from the Intel865 chipset on my system (http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html). The situation is complicated because I'm on a wireless network and can't seem to connect to that from within Debian, so even though these patches are available I can't download them (I tried installing one by hand from a CD but it didn't work). So, to get to the point: are there any other distros that cope better with the Intel865 chipset, and would it be safe to install one over Debian? I still want to keep XP, so don't want to erase all partitions. My other system is an old Dell Optiplex with an Intel celeron chipset, and Fedora works fine on that. Many thanks in advance |
The Debian machine probably doesn't have the X software installed. You can install it by running the apt-get utility as in:
Code:
apt-get kde |
Hi,
Thanks for that, but I do actually have X installed - it tries to start, but fails. |
Please post relevant error messages.

Luckily I can access my linux partition from Windows, so here's my xorg.conf file, and what I think is the relevant bit of my Xorg.0 log file -
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file) Code:
(...) |
What kind of mouse do you have?

Hi,
My box is a Dell Dimension3000, and I've got a standard Dell 3-button optical mouse. I just changed to an old IBM 2-button rollerball one, then Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg |
I very much doubt it is a problem with the chipset. Did X ever work for you? If it did, then the problem is that your X configuration became messed up somehow.
You have this in the xorg.conf file Quote:
That suggests very strongly that you simply have some bad values somewhere within your xorg.conf file. Look at the logs, and try and fix the problems. I also doubt it is related to the amount of video ram. it seems more like a resolution or horizontal/verticle refresh thing. Peace, JimBass |
Try changing this:
Driver "i810" BusID "PCI:0:2:0" VideoRam 32768 To this for now: Driver "vesa" and see whether that gets you into the GUI. I don't understand why your device driver is "i810" but xorg is trying to load kernel module "i915"? Seems like something amiss there. Do you have a program called xorgconf on your system? If you do, you might try running that and maybe it'll force the loading of the correct device driver if you choose "i810" when running the program? Cheers. |
OK cheers guys, I'll try your suggestions and let you know how it turns out (think I've already tried configuring for vesa, but I'll have another go).
