linux wont START...

The other day i was working in linux and all of a sudden it froze, I tired to click on anything and nothing responded...I waited a few mins to see if it would of come back and nothing.

I pressed the power button on my pc and it turned off, when the boot menu came up i seleted "Linux", I did some werid prosses of booting up before. Some blue screen comes up with a list saying "OK" "OK", alot of times....

When thats done It goes to a black screen telling me to login so i login, then it shows me as "ROOT-me@computer". And it stays there like if im suppose to do something....type or whatever.

I dont know what the hell happen to it, im a :newbie: to Linux only got like a few weeks with it.

I got Linux Mandrake 10.0. What am i Suppose to do????

Thanks....

Try 'startx' and see if that gets your gui back... and please make yourself a regular user if you have not already, you should not be trouncing around as root...perhaps that is the cause of you problem.

In any event, it sounds as though xdm is not being run at boot... but without more info such as which desktop manager you are using, I cannot really help at this point.

Files to check:
/etc/inittab : make sure that initdefault is set to '5' not '3'

It might also be that your X is broken. Try the 'startx' and if it craps out post the error messages...

Ok, it goes in when i type startx...

Know when im going to turn off the computer (the box that says 'restart' 'shut down' dont come up just 'logoff') it goes back to the black screen...

and everytime i'm going to start in linux mode i'ma have to do that all the time, i dont want that.
i want it how it was.

and when i try to go in /etc/inittab/, it says that i have no permission, i get on SU and still says it....

Yeah, ok. Your problem for sure is that xdm (or kdm) is not being started. Try:
"chkconfig --add xdm" as root...

If that doesn't work you are going to have to get help from someone more knowledgeable with Mandy to tell you how to get xdm to start at boot...
