Linux with Homeportal (2wirepc)

Y'all,
I was searching Homeportal for infor regarding using Linux on my computer (a spare one, 550MHZ Pentium, 18 G HD, Windows98 se)and found this article: Has anyone tried it?? And if so, do I need to start with Windows98 se already on ther computer to connect to the internet or is there a better way?

If the connection is just a wired ehternet connection then I see no problems on any linux distro as long as the network card is detected and module loaded. The docs are for really old distros. Very fague and not mentioning the way there routers even work. DHCP gets its own IP, netmask, Gateway and DNS info on connection. Not much you have to do but setup the network interface to get its own IP from DHCP.

Working at an ISP, I can say that there isn't any problem using linux (or just about any other OS) with a 2Wire router, or most routers, in DHCP mode. It really is a "plug it in and turn it on" set of instructions.

Your computer will most likely start in DHCP mode (unless specified otherwise in installation or post-install configuration), regardless of operating system (linux or not). DHCP should allow for your machine to automatically retrieve the relevant information from your 2Wire.
