A virtual machine does exactly what it name says: It emulates a complete PC, build out of virtual hardware. This is including a virtual network card. The installed OS will not see anything of your physical hardware, just the virtual hardware. There are possibilities to pass through hardware to the OS in the virtual machine, but AFAIK this is currently in an experimental stadium for anything but USB devices.
