Linux under VMWare Player running under Windows 8. Can I access my HD?
 

10 years since I used Unix so everything is a little rusty.

I need to run a Wiki (TWiki) so I have installed VMWare Player on my Windows 8 laptop and sorted out a TWiki site that all seems to work.

I want to transfer my old Twiki files which are sitting on my Windows HD. How can I get my Linux VM to see my HD?

There are many ways to access data.

Use shared folders as part of virtual addtions.

Drag and drop with additions installed.

Use samba, ftp or such across network.

Use usb drive to transfer data.

Maybe a few more, but those are the ways I tend to use.

I don't think I'd mount a physical disk just yet as a newbie.

Linux + VMWare is a real culture shock after being in Windows land for a while.

Finding the relevant documentation and the right strategy was not easy.
The nursery slopes are not well signposted at all.
There seemed to be a catch 22 situation where I couldn't mount a disc without installing the VMWare tools and I couldn't install the tools without mounting a disc.
Answer:
You must install VMWare Tools for anything to work.
Find the right documentation (thankyou)
Use the right strategy (shared folder) (thankyou)
Also:
Don't use Chrome to read the on-line documentation because it will not work (MS Explorer is OK)
