Linux Ubuntu 18.10 - freezes when checking disk

My computer recently stopped working. It freezes just when the Windows loading animation starts displaying on my BIOS splash screen. I'm trying to install Linux on my computer, and I saw in the install options it had a disk checker, so I did that. When I run that, this output is displayed:

[ 5.623986] irq7: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
[ 5.624075] handlers:
[ 5.624085] [<0000000045fc7c92>] amd_gpio_irq_handler
[ 5.624098] Disabling IRQ #7

And then it freezes, with the cursor on the next line not blinking. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

I have an M.2 SSD and a hard drive in the PC.

Can you boot into a live system from a usb stick?
If so you could try and analyse the hard drive's health state using smartmontools.

What do you mean by boot into a live system?

By the way, I use the SSD as my main disk (where Windows is stored). I've tried booting up without the hard drive and it had the same result, so I think the problem is more likely to reside with my SSD.

You said "I'm trying to install Linux on my computer". Which distro are you trying to install and how?
A typical approach is downloading iso images and creating a bootable usb drive. When you boot from the usb drive, some images will offer a menu option to run the distro as a live session. You load the complete operating system from the usb stick and can start a session that doesn't even require hard disks to be present.

See e.g. here for ubuntu instructions: https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutoria...-you-install#0

Once in a live session you can even install packages (such as smartmontools) and do a hardware analysis.

Sorry, I didn't see that option when I first booted my PC up. I chose run without installing and I get this output:

[ 5.603898] irq 7: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
[ 5.604036] handlers:
[ 5.604049] [<000000001ba64e9c>] amd_gpio_irq_handler
[ 5.604070] Disabling IRQ #7

And I get the same freeze as I described in my first post.

I added the irqpoll argument and it loaded up Ubuntu successfully.

Hmm, see e.g. here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingIRQProblems
According to this irqpoll should not be a permanent fix.

I am afraid there will be no easy step-by-step guide. You have to find out the root cause through log analysis, putting error messages into search engines etc.

Once you have done a bit of researching and feel confident to well describe your problem open a new thread with a descriptive title to attract people who are knowledgable in this field. (I am not). This is probably not related to ubuntu nor to your disk, so the current thread title is misleading and the person who might be able to help you might not event look at your problem.
