You might also check out the O'Reiley (sp?) line of books. They tend to be very helpful. I have "Running Linux" - very good. And there are others as well. Try to get the latest edition as the computer world truns pretty quickly.

Rute user is a good read it starts from the ground up and covers things that are mostly universal to linux

edit: and Oreilly does make good books, in fact my favorite linux book is from an affilate of theirs called No Starch Press, the book is The Linux Cookbook 2nd Edition
