Linux system building as an Education tool
 

Although I have been a consistent Linux user for quite a few years now, I have never had the time to go into the system in earnest: by this I mean being able to put together a system - perhaps by starting with a kernel and a bootloader - with whatever components I might fancy. And using this experience as a sort of hands-on education on Linux.

I vaguely remember a HowTo, put together in the good old floppy days, in some Linux site, directed at building a basic command line interface system, but have lost track of it, and anyhow hardware has moved quite a bit forward in the meantime.

I understand that distros such as Tiny Core build lean operating systems, but they seem to rely on ready made scripts to get things moving, and anyway their objectives lie outside the realms of Education.

Suggestions, hints, pointers and criticism are all equally welcome. Thank you in advance.

There is a forum here called Linux From Scratch. I believe this is what you are looking for. Plenty of information there.

For whatever reason its not working. However, I looked at the cached version on Google, and its a very nice page. I wish I'd had it when I build my own linux from scratch :cry:

If you don't want to get quite nuts and bolts as LFS then consider Gentoo.
