If it's an Intel motherboard, it likely has an Intel NIC chipset. These should be well supported out of the box by Linux and should work without needing you to install a driver. If you're running an older release of RHEL5, you might consider getting the newest update (4, I believe). If your hardware is very new, you might need to download the driver from Intel's site, but I've never had to do this for any Intel NIC. Are you sure the NIC isn't working now? What do "lspci" and "ifconfig -a" show?
