Linux startup times
 

I have read many posts about redhat 9's unnecessarily long startup times and am wondering what everyone's startup times are for their linux distributions from pressing "on" to logging into your user accounts. Since redhat 9 is the first linux system I'm using, I thought that it's startup time was alright and I just want to compare.

For my P4 1.5 ghz 256 ram pc (workstation redhat 9), my startup time is 1 min 40 sec.

SuSE 8.1 comes up in 1:01 minute on a 1.1 Ghz AMD with 512m ram.

P4 2.4 GHZ (400 mhz bus), 512 DDR RAM

takes 42 secs. to get into my desktop. (RH 9.0)

hmm, my startup really is slow..., angel, is your low startup time due to your 2.4 ghz or did u shut down some things that boot with the computer?

Part of the low startup time surely is the processor, but I also stopped some services for loading at startup.

Try running 'ntsysv' at console and see what you have selected to start everytime you boot. You can press F1 at any service to see what it does in order to see if you need it or not. Press space bar to mark/unmark items.

I use Slack 9, on a 1.2 ghz AMD, and I have a startup time around 45 secs.

Slack 9, 1.1GHz Athlon, all kinds of daemons I need to turn off, stock kernel, 48 seconds with a 5 second boot option delay. So 43 if I hit enter real fast.

3:20 seconds into KDE 2 desktop...

Then again, I'm running a P166Mhz with 64Mb RAM!

My first Linux box was exactly like yours. I bought another 64M of memory and it did wonders for my speed (relatively speaking).

Newbie Question alert::: How do I run ntsysv in a console. I opened a console and typed su, then my root password and then ntsysv but it gives me this error:

rberry88@linuxxp:~> su
Password:
linuxxp:/home/rberry88 # ntsysv
bash: ntsysv: command not found
linuxxp:/home/rberry88 #

Any help??

On SuSE when you run as su root you get a very skimpy PATH.

I suggest that you try the full path name of the command, something like:

/usr/local/bin/ntsysv

or wherever it may be.

43 seconds (lilo selection included).
should get faster when i do a new kernel compile, and use that.

console to desktop takes about 4 secs.

I would install another 64Mb of RAM - if the board supported more than 64Mb!

Specs below in sig. All services as originally installed plus a few I had to add for UPS etc.

Power button to KDE desktop 1:17 give or take a second or so.

There is a lot of services though.
