Linux slowed my system way down

hey guys - i recently installed mandrake 10.1 onto my system..

dual boot with windows XP..

as soon as i made my linux partition and installed linux - my machine grinds to a halt on bootup..

linux takes 6-7mins to boot up.. and even then programs take 4-5minutes to open..

windows xp takes around 5mins to boot up - same sluggish response from certain programs..

windows xp is on hard drive one all on its own..

mandrake is on the 2nd - along with my windows e: drive..

i just deleted my linux partitions and the machine is back to normal..

any ideas as to why it caused just a serious slow down?

thanks

des
