Linux slow?

I downloaded Linux redhat 9 from redhats website for free. I installed it to an empty drive and it ran very slow. Mostly I noticed it when I went to play some of the 3d games (games others than the card games and such) and the games were very choppy and slow. It also ran slow in general, trying to open apps, using the web browsing, things like that. I'm running a Gigabyte board, 1.2 athlon, 512 mb ram, 64 mb, vid card. What do I need to do/change to take care of this problem?

To fix the problems with the 3d apps, you have to get the newest driver for your video card. You can get them from the website of the manufacturer of your card.

For games, you probably need to install another driver for your video card. Which one you have?
General: you need to check if there are programs you don't need running in the background. Which services have you choosen to start at boot? Please post the result of 'ps aux' (run the command from a terminal) - it's a list of all running programs. Also have a look at 'top' results. It shows most processor and memory hungry programs.
