Linux Slackware 10 hanging.
While I am in X My linux install freezes every once and a while, im curious if this could be related to my nforce2 chipset on my motherboard. Is it cureable completely? I have yet to install the nforce drivers or the nvidia display drivers, I want to have a general idea this lack of drivers is the reason for brief freezing.(Freezes for about 6 seconds, mouse doesnt work or anything) Will I have to get a new motherboard? Any response is appreciated, thanks.

How often does this occur, is accompanied by
hdd activity or copying stuff between media? Are there any indications of problems in the system logs? /var/log/* Cheers, Tink |
I had a similar issue while running the nvidia gfx driver. I reinstalled and haven't installed the driver but I noticed when it happened my computer was running the kmod cron job. Is this the same for you? Try to monitor it closely. I think the kmod cron job runs at 10 till the hour and thats when i would have issues with the hang.
While i did have the driver installed i stopped the kmod cron job from running by removing it from the crontab and it seemed to help but I wouldn't really consider it a fix. Sorry this doesn't help but im kinda interested in what others have to say. |
Are you using a 2.4 or a 2.6 kernel? I've heard that there are some issues with the proprietary Nvidia drivers and recent 2.6 series kernels. You can check your /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog files to see if there are any error messages.

Fully knowing of the nvidia issues with the 2.6 kernel. I used the stock 2.4.26 bareacpi kernel that came with slack. I can install the driver again to see if it happens. I use this system mainly for programming and never do anything that really requires hardware accleration. But just for the purpose of testing I will install the nvidia driver report back with what happens.
