Linux skype install

trying to see how to install skype in ubuntu 1710.

i dowloaded the folder, extracted contents automatically, then asks me to authenticate with my password before installing at there is a 1-100% install bar above it.

but i put in my password and everything disappears. tried a few times, same error.

i looked at some youtube videos - seems like they are using "apt-get" xyz, but the screens are blurry can't see what they are typing in and my sound card is dead.

thx.

Please tell us the rest of the story.

You downloaded what folder from where?

You are trying to install it precisely how?

What error messages do you receive? (If none, try doing the install from the command line. The install might throw some useful error messages; if so, post them here, being sure to surround them with "code" tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the "compose post" window.)

(I just visited the Skype website. The only Linux option they offer is a *.deb. I have found that installing a *.deb file locally is easiest with dpkg.)

at skype for linux, i downloaded the debian download. skypeforlinux-64.deb. i tried to install it by clicking on the folder. when i did, i got a skypeforlinux page that has a link "install". clicking that after clicking that get popup "authenticaion required to install untrusted software"...password. in the background shows "installing 0% bar"once i put in password, and hit authenticate, the box disappears and the background 'install' does too.

simply, the dowload is from skype linux site, and the download i open and get the 'install' and 'authenticate".

for command line, what are the commands?

i'll look at dpkg - new to linux.

thx

Why not use the UbuntuUpdates PPA?

https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/skypeforlinux

Full instructions on the page and you get automatic updates.

if you download the deb file and click on it, it will be unpacked, but this is not the intended way to install.
You need to use command line, not gui, and run (as root):
Code:
dpkg -i <downloaded deb file>
apt-get install -f

thanks F,S,P........... i used the "dpkg" site info and it seemed to work; maybe using the ubuntu updates link would be better, but for now, as far as i can tell it is working.

thx!!

Mm.

I've never come across that before. Whenever I install a .deb file in a 'buntu-based Puppy, it simply installs; it doesn't 'unpack' itself.

However, I will recommend using gDebi for installing standalone .debs.

Code:
sudo apt-get install gdebi
It does a far more thorough job of pulling in any required dependencies than Synaptic or the Software Centre (or whatever they call it these days) seem to, because it's designed to work specifically with .deb packages.

Works for me in Anti-X, anyway.

Mike.

skype is a different case, because you download the deb, install it with dpkg but it will not handle its dependencies. That's why you need to execute apt-get install -f which will install all the required but missing packages.
