I am new to linux.one thing i am getting confused is abt
how many inherent shells linux have.as in unix csh,tcsh,
bourne .here only thing i hear is bash.pls enlighten me.
another thing is x-windows like system comes in two
forms GNOME And KDE .But they seem a lot similar.then
why not only one of them?

bash the the unix equivalent of the bourne shell - bash stands for "bourne again shell". there are also different shells under linux, but bash is by far the most popular.... there's also ssh, zsh, ash, ect.

for the x-windows, kde and gnome are two different window managers... probably the most popular ones. there are quite a few others tho. both kde and gnome are built on top of x-windows, which is a base system to handle some windowing and graphical tasks (mostly the dirty work), but it's up to the window manager to make everything look pretty. kde is a desktop suite in itself, along with window manager and applications. gnome is more of a collection of useful programs - it's made to run along with other window managers, like enlightenment or sawmill - but i don't think it runs with kde.

Linux has all of the shells you are used to (sh, csh, tcsh, zsh, etc.), it just happpens that bash seems to be the most popular, and the default user by many distros. Bash is the Bourne Again SHell; an enhancement to the bourne shell (sh), and a very bad pun. You can use any shell you prefer.

The X windowing system itself is basically a graphical windowing interface. Gnome and KDE are not versions of X, they are desktop environments for X. Basically, they provide a common look, feel, and functionality to all applications run in X. As with shells, you can use whichever you like, or use both if you want. This is a pretty diluted explanation, but you should get the idea.

After Shell It's upgrade
 

Thanks for the quick reply both of u.I am installing Red Hat 6.1.
will it be possible for me to upgrade to 7.1.
i am installing from CD-ROM.and everything goes fine
and suddenly it starts to detect mouse,everything goes
wrong.some messages scroll saying something about
graphic settings and then
the message 'NO SUITABLE NODE FOUND'.Can u get me
out of this.

ok... is it on an upgrade or a fresh install where the mouse can't be detected? is this a regular mouse, or a usb?

Hi,
My mouse is getting detected.i have installed red hat
6.1 by putting the option text.but now when i start
display by startx it's giving mode not found.
i have tried xconf but when it's asking abt clock settings i am not sure what to give.and superprobe is failing too.
i have a generic VGA compatible card.waiting to hear from u.

As a general rule, ignore clock settings and the superprobe. Superprobe will crash on some cards. You should also be able to select that this is a generic VGA card (under xf86config).

Its really worth having a look on that card to try to work out the chipset. If there is a specific accelerated server for X to go with your card it can make an massive different in performance.
