First, we volunteer our time here...asking for/expecing 'asap' help is plain rude. Secondly, you need to read the "Question Guidelines" link in my posting signature..we are happy to HELP you, but YOU have to show us what effort you have put into this. Post what you have written/done/tried on your own, and tell us where you're stuck, and provide details about your system.

But this is not the place to come to have someone hand you a script, because you don't want to write one.

In addition to TB0ne's tips, I'd point you in the direction of SSH, specifically OpenSSH. Using that, you can make single-purpose keys to run any program or script you like automatically on the remote servers. There are separate manual pages for the client, server, and their configuration files. Once you have plain keys working, you can look in the manual page for sshd in the section "AUTHORIZED_KEYS FILE FORMAT" for details about how to make the key launch your script or utility automatically.

all asap means is
as soon as possible, which in here always takes place anyways ... I see is no insult in using that acronym, he was even Ploite enough to say please .. so where is the rudeness?

could you please help me as soon as possible? is a statement of taking into consideration of the other person time, therefore it is a actually is being polite.

he even gave thanks in advance without even considering that he may not even get any help. Which shows that this person gave them in LQ the benefit of the doubt that they are actually helpful people. Which equates to a complement.

the english language is not that tricky.

Yes, and 90+% of people usually post "thanks in advance"...it's not tricky to figure out it's just said for the sake of being said. And telling someone "good luck with that" isn't an insult either, is it?? After all, you're wishing them LUCK, right????

No...that's sarcasm. And telling someone you need something ASAP does NOT mean "as soon as you can get to it", otherwise you'd have said THAT. English is NOT tricky, but the meanings are certainly clear too. If you're concerned with my reply to the OP, please...feel free to post your own.

"good luck with that, yes is a smart ass way of saying haha as if, and I am not going to help you, fat chance of that happening, hahahahaha at you ..
( and the term smart ass is even being used wrong in that statement, so yes fall back to sarcasm)
but,

asap because it is an acronym, only means, As Soon As Possible = ASAP.

if someone is busy doing something, regardless if they know that person is or not, and would like that person to do something for them right now! because that person requesting this needs it done right NOW! but do not want to impose on that other person in such a manner of being rude to that person by telling them that they have to do it RIGHT NOW, because I said so. They are now thrown into a moral conflict as a result of it.

that person needs something that he or she cannot do on their own done right away. so they have to look to another to do this for them. but they know that they do not have the right to demand anything like that from another, and not wanting to be rude by demanding that it gets done right now by another person. Mankind has devised a system called taking others into consideration.

it is media that makes it look like it is an offense request. where do we usually see this being used? in a hospital setting on TV where the word STAT is now used, which means “instantly” or “immediately.” Because ASAP as not quick enough. Simply because all it means is, as soon as you can. not RIGHT NOW!

so asking or telling someone using the acronym asap, is just them saying do this for me as soon as possible, because of mans laziness, they too have developed a love for acronyms. so they do not have to use so many words to say something to get the point across.

adding the word please is just adding that person politeness to it even more so.

the reality principle has to be set in motion, if it is then we will see people using asap instead of the selfish act of do it now, without caring about the other person.

and a thank you ahead of time is an act of politeness, and minding their manners least they forget. so they say it ahead of time, too just in case they do not get the chance to they will say thank you a head of time to make sure that other knows full well that they have been thankful for what that other has done for them without even seeing that that person has done so.

that is the person that does this putting complete trust into that person that he or she will do this for them therefore removing hope that they will do whatever it is that they said they would.

Huh? I was heartbroken that this didn't get marked [SOLVED] What happened?

bangnagr 12-04-2016 05:30 AM

As an Indian myself, I know in India most people in companies use word ASAP for literally everything. Here, most times they always end sentence with ASAP. "Bring that report ASAP", "Make tea for me ASAP", "Will you come here ASAP" etc etc. They are not rude, but its frustrating and irritating many times for many when they hear ASAP word. I myself have got into serious fight with many colleagues/clients when I hear the word ASAP when I am not in good mood. It sometimes feels like they are giving commands to us. One must try to avoid certain word while using forums where people across world are participating.

Having said that, let me also tell, to TB0ne, while preaching others how to use words in their questions, you have to self check how rude you are to fellow members. Using Bold letters with questions, using capitals, using stars and capitals like *DID YOU* and answering questions with irritating questions. All this while you are in Newbie section, for god sake its *NEWBIE SECTION*. What do you expect from a newbie?

I may be rude, but its important to pass this observation - I gone through several of his past posts, and have come to conclusion that - TB0ne is a racist (his writing style dramatically changes when the OP's origin country is non-west), he is a LQ troll, he is always angry and he never helps anybody. If anybody don't believe me, I request other members to go and check his past posts yourself. You will understand. He may be good at beginning days as member, but now it is clearly apparent that he has lost patience on how to behave with newbies.

I'm sorry for being rude, but I think its important for me to make this statement.

Thanks

Relax. Smoke a J. We are all friends here, communications styles not withstanding. Postel's law is just as applicable to forums as it is to networking and other protocols:

"... follow a general principle of robustness: be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others."
from RFC 761
We still have not heard back from the original poster about what they have tried in regard to getting SSH keys working. Most everything else (including this) is off topic.

He ain't gonna come back. TB0ne has scared him away, like he has done to many other newbies.

What people do elsewhere isn't of concern..what is SAID is of concern. I don't care if you walk into peoples offices every day and say "Hey moron, get up and get me tea", that won't fly elsewhere. As you say, when you're participating in forums across the world, you do need to be mindful, don't you? And I very much appreciate the irony of you DEFENDING the use of ASAP, and at the very same time, saying that you've gotten into "serious fight with many colleagues/clients" when THEY use it on you, because as you said.."it sometimes feels like they are giving commands".

Yet when I say it's rude...I'm somehow wrong and/or racist??

Bold letters, stars, etc., are called "emphasis"...since this is text on a screen, please share with everyone else how you expect that to be conveyed?

My reply style changes based on the questions and other things posted. Anyone posting "gimme a script for xxx" will get the same reply as anyone else, regardless of where they're from. You say I never help anybody...yet my posting history says different. I sure don't see you handing out help, since this is your 'beginning days'

Stop with the whining; the OP probably won't return, because they asked for a handout and were refused. Chances are they posted in ANOTHER forum, where someone did their script for them...THAT'S why we won't hear from them again.

And bangnagr, your problem seems to stem from this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0/#post5333618

...from some time ago. Where, after I DID answer your questions one by one, you still found it necessary to be rude with such comments as:
  • Who are WE here. Please don't do that. Are you talking on behalf of all other members?
  • So why bother at all? Just go home.
  • Questioning my questions is not helping at all.
..AND you seemed to have no problem using bold letters in YOUR post, did you? And a forum MODERATOR even told you essentially the same things. Remarkably, you thanked them:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0/#post5333985

That thread where your behavior was IDENTICAL to what was posted here: questions with no apparent effort to solve them on your own. And since you're throwing around 'racist', you probably had better look at the 'racist' "Question Guidelines" link...the one written by Jeremy and the moderators, specifically TELLING PEOPLE

Is *THAT* 'racist' too??? Show me where the OP posted any effort of their own, despite being asked?

You've been here two years now, and as of yet, don't seem to have even ATTEMPTED to answer anyone elses questions or even TRY to help anyone else. And yet you see fit to call me derogatory names, and say I don't help anyone???

I do agree with @TB0ne on the OP did not show anything to give anyone any idea at all. by what he said it was like he as a boss of a company, maybe that is where he learned how to talk to people. but nevertheless,

he stated,
Quote:

where TB0ne had every right to tell him to throw us a bone on that one, (Dr. Evil reference, from Austin Powers), because the way it is stated, he was actually requesting someone in here to figure out everything for him then do his work for him and write him a fully working script. On that part I agree that @TB0ne had something to say about that. but how he ended that request is just standard lingo, if you may. that is what one can call standard procedure.

It might have been better handled if one just rolled their eyes on that last part and focused on the body of that letter instead. then replied to him the same, I need that information ASAP if you please. then left it at that.

a right back at you buddy. if ya know what I mean. ;)

I agree that I could have probably left off the part about "ASAP", but that is what was called a "teachable moment", to me. Instead of letting someone continue to do such things, and (as bangnagr said, "its frustrating and irritating many times for many when they hear ASAP word. I myself have got into serious fight with many colleagues/clients when I hear the word ASAP when I am not in good mood"), get people even MORE wound-up later, it's best to catch it up front, in my opinion.

And I am fairly entertained by the fact I am called a 'racist' for saying something, when my replies to iPad and Ardvark71 have been FAR more harsh, and those are just from recent memory. I wasn't trying to be insulting to the OP, and even told them specifically we would be happy to help. But I have no patience for flumps...and handups are far different than handOUTS.
