Linux recognizes Realtek Audio but no sound - works fine in Windows 7


Realtek audio used to work fine - several Linux distros. Suddenly no sound - all distros I've tried have speaker icon, can test sound card etc, everything is fine just no sound is produced.
Works fine in Windows, and Windows diagnostics find nothing wrong with sound card

I've been trying things suggested in linux forums for months to no avail

Might there be a program out there that could figure out what this sound card is doing?
Or do I bite it, disable the card and replace it? I'm really curious, though.

One of the outputs may be turned off. Try using alsamixer to experiment with the various controls. I've found it to be a life saver on many occasions.

Thanks.
But I'm wondering why it worked before with Ubuntu, then Linux Mint, then just quit. And now none of the other LiveCDs like Manjaro or Bodhi can get a peep, even though they think they are with icons and testing ability there. just no sound.

Because of this, this box does not currently have a Linux install; I've gotten tired of so-far fruitless attempts to hear anything. Which is why I asked if anybody knew of a miracle-hardware tester out there

Without having a distribution already installed, there's no easy way (or possibly no way at all) to help you diagnose this issue.

It's probably something simple. I had one sound chip that had an "engineering output" device that had to be disabled to get the sound to work. In other cases digital sound is enabled, but analog is the only output that will work.

Do the speakers output sound when you do the test? Many times the condition can be fixed just by changing the output mode. There is really no magical cure.

I agree with Ardvark71. If you don't get yourself a Linux install on the computer in question, then there's not much anyone can do to help you.

Once you're all set up, install inxi (if your newly-installed distro doesn't include it out of the box), run inxi -A to produce info on your sound card, and post the output here. Then the diagnostics may begin...

There was a time when if you muted sound in MS Windows, it stayed muted until you unmuted it again in MS Windows.
That's just one of the MS bugs.

OK, I'll bow to your collective wisdom and try one more install. This time I'll use Mint 18.1 MATE. Then I'll try everything again; maybe someone on this forum will be able to spot the issue??

(And a side note - rhetorical - why do search engines insist on giving windows results when told NOT windows ??)

Hi...

If the sound doesn't work, please go here and follow the instructions. Provide the results (or a link to the results) in your next post.

If the command mentioned there doesn't work, try this one...

Someone mentioned trying alsamixer and making sure none of the outputs are muted. Have you tried that ? I know that certain distros I have used strangely install with the main sound output muted. Simple to fix with alsamixer and it stays fixed. Hope it's as simple as that.

Finally had a chance to look at this - here's the results of ALSA Information Script v 0.4.64. It's long, but if somebody can see why there's no actual sound it would be really nice. I also tried fedora 25, same thing - everything but actual sound.

if you got pavucontrol installed. open it, and check to be sure your audio card is not muted. it defaults mute.

And if not, you should be able to install it using this command...

Disclaimer: Be careful with commands that are prefaced with "su" or "sudo." They will essentially allow root access to your system. Mistakes could possibly damage or even destroy your OS.

Also, why did you mark this thread as "SOLVED?" Did BW-userx's suggestion resolve the issue?
