Linux /proc diskstats question

I'm working on a project for school that has to get the disk reads and writes for my harddrive. I'm using Mandriva 2006 and reading the 'sda' device and it works fine on my machine at home but not on the computer in my schools linux lab where I have to give my report. I've read that 'sda' is for serial drives and 'hda is for pata drives. I'm using a pata drive but I'm getting correct stats for my drive when reading 'sda'. Why is that? Also is there a line in the diskstats file that gives totals for all hard drives? Thanks

You shouldn't be. Is this a standard IDE drive? Is it hooked up by USB? Is this on your home computer or the schools?

No. Is there some reason you cannot simply add the figures?
