random problems

I've had problems similar to those, where my network wouldn't start. It was due to a partial-install of linux. I ignored some errors while I was installing and things worked great for weeks but then I started having problem. You may want to re-install or make sure you installed it right. Also when you post, include your linux distribution and versions, that will help a lot.

You don't need to use bootp, its for booting off the router and I don't think you're doing that :)
