Linux PPP - A MAJOR Obstacle.
 

I tried to get online on Vector Linux after following all instructions. My modem connects but the web pages don't load. Next, I tried KDE under FreeBSD it even has KPPP to help with this setup. Again however, the connection was OK but the web pages didn't load.

Later on I went on google and found this file in regards to PPP connection setup:

There are so many files and steps. Looks like getting connected online is a very big task on Linux. No wonder, several prefer to stay with windows. This can even be called Linux PPP Well, where you go down get stuck and can never climb out.

Can't this process be simplified or made to work properly ? Appreciate any assistance in this regard to simplify this process. Thanks.

have you tried putting in your DNS addresses?
 

Ummm I am pretty much a newby but I had what seems like it was exactly the same problem. I could connect but then I couldn´t surf the net.

It turns out I just had to set up my DNS, have you set up your DNS?

Yes, I did setup my numerical DNS correctly. However, I am not sure about how to setup the letter DNS.

Are you sure you've added nameservers? Try using telnet or ping to resolve some addresses.
Do you also have a LAN connection? Try route as root to see which is being used for internet access iirc.

No LAN, just a simple home user.


By the way, I am just typing this from Linux, Knoppix. Surprisingly, I was able to get online no problems and even the DNS was set Auto as a Breeze. No Sweat ! This was my first time trying this out.

This tells me that the other dialin programs are not that great. They all want manual entry of DNS etc., The Auto DNS option is even Disabled in FreeBSD KDE !!! I hope all the other versions of Linux enable smooth dialin like Knoppix.

Meanwhile, please answer my questions and any further related info. and suggestions are welcome.
