Linux performance
Where can I find comprehensive information on optimizing Linux? I keep searching online but seem to get only to performance monitoring.
I don't want to run a lighter version of Linux or upgrade my hardware! Just want to get my current distro and future ones I might install to run at its best. Any ideas!? Thanks, Mike |

Very General Question. So I'll throw a bone. http://opentechnow.blogspot.com/2010...ion-guide.html |
I'm actually interested in all areas of Linux that could be optimized. Is there any website that examine this topic, general or specific?

One good tip is to check what services are running. They may be inactive, but they are still taking up their little bit of memory and they still had to be launched. You may find you're running Bluetooth support without Bluetooth devices, or a battery monitor on a desktop, or support for accessing Windows files over a LAN you haven't got, and so on. How you do it, I can't tell you for sure, as every distro has its own tool, but you might find something in the menu under services or configuration.

I don't think there is a guide that covers everything that can be optimized. I mean you just have to search and decide what to do.
Some things can help performance in different areas: Custom kernel Filesystem I/O scheduler Startup apps http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/alter...nel-patch.html noatime CFLAGS='-march=native' or http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Safe_Cflags Desktop environment / Window manager |
Netsearching for Linux performance tuning found some useful looking pages.

Still a bit vague on what you want but maybe there is something in one (or more) of the links in my signature that could help?
