linux password server/roaming profiles

hi there,

with a windows NT/200x server you can setup your network so no matter where you log in on any computer you have the same desktop and password, i was wondering what the linux version of an NT/200x server was and weather you can set roaming profiles, i want to have 3 computer's all running Fedora Core 3, one being the password server/profile server and the other two being workstations.

what i really want to be able to do is use the new XFCE interface and just place certain programs on the task bar, so i really want to be able to edit that too.

now i realize that asking someone to explain to be how to do this is a little over the top, but could someone point me in the right direction, like what to look for in google

you can achieve this by setting a NIS server
