Linux/Oracle/Ubuntu Compatibility

Hello:

For starters, I hope I am at the right forum.

I'm looking to purchase a laptop which will only have Linux installed because I'll be running Oracle. Windows Vista is giving me lots of trouble with Oracle.

The laptop I'm planning on buying will come installed with Ubuntu.

First, is Ubuntu compatible with Oracle?

Second, if it is not, when the laptop arrives with Ubuntu, is it possible to install Red Hat or any other Linux OS which will be compatible with Oracle?

Any advice/guidance would be great?

Thanks.

oracle has a version of red hat enterprise linux...otherwise RHEL, CentOS, Scientific Linux will be ok with Oracle.

Postgresql has tested support functions for Oracle in Ubuntu.

Is there documentation available for the installation process of Oracle with Ubuntu?

When I receive the laptop with Ubuntu, would I delete Ubuntu and install Red Hat?

I'm not trying to install in a "server" environment. I want to install Linux and Oracle for personal use. I work from home and I work off my laptop.

Oracle express can be easily installed on Ubuntu. Oracle has an apt repository for it.

To install Oracle Enterprise or similar editions, you probably just need to run the universal installer with the --ignoreSysPrereqs switch.

There is a bit of pre-install setup that needs to be done on Linux, so you probably want to google around for some tutorials.

I run Oracle on Suse Linux Enterprise at work. I'm not a big fan of SLES in general, but for running Oracle it's got a nice convenient rpm that sets up the OS environment for Oracle. Might be worth a look.
