linux on top of windows
 

Is there any way to run linux as a window in Windows? (the opposite of running windows on linux using win4lin or whatever)? I'm travelling and miss my linux boxes at home but am not up to trying to load linux on my laptop - I'd like a risk free way of running linux.

It seems to me that there used to be a distro called winlin or something that did this.

You could use something like VMWare or use maybe something like Cygwin. Cygwin you can get for free. Check it out here: http://www.cygwin.com/

What brand/model is it? Most laptops/notebooks will
support Linux these days, and risk-free would be to wipe
windows ;)

If you have a cdrom why not try Knoppix. I have found it great.

It's a compaq. I share it with my wife, so I have to keep microsoft on it. Failure for microsoft to boot for over 12 hours is divorce material. (I've found this out at home a number of times - so I always try to make sure that at least one of our home computers can boot microsoft at any time!)

What is knoppix?

Dual boot Linux and Windoze. I did that on my wife's machine for awhile, until I got my own machine. She learned to live with the Grub menu -- I had a fairly short timeout set and I made Windoze the default OS.

Knoppix - A Live Linux system on a CD; No installations needed.
Just Boot from the disc, and Voila!
