Linux on Asus Eee Pc 1000hd with Xp
 

I have an Asus 1000hd Eee PC with Windows XP. I would like to install Linux Ubuntu on it instead. Does anyone know if that would be a good idea or not?

installing Linux instead of Windows XP is a good idea (don't discuss it :D) and let discuss the idea of using an Ubuntu distro : I would say "don't use Ubuntu if you can use a lighter one" because I fear that Ubuntu would be too heavy for such a computer.
Okay, actually Ubuntu will work but in my idea of a notebook, it has to respond quickly to events, boot relatively fast and using a lighter distro would save you time, battery time and heat (if you travel with it). If you don't care about that and just want something that "Just Works", well, use Ubuntu.
It depends on your needs and you familiarity with Linux distros...

I had an Asus eee 900(came w/ Xandros). I installed ubuntu eee on it, and it ran pretty good. I didn't like the NBR gui, but setting up as a normal Gnome desktop was easy enough. The computer itself, I found is slow. I think the bottleneck on mine was the SSD. The SSD technology is a great idea, but I'm not totally sold on it yet, it still seems slow, but I think its gonna be great when the kinks get worked out. Fortunately, it appears you have the one w/ the 80gig hard drive, so thats good.

I sold my Asus eee, and bought an Acer Aspire One w/ a 160gig hard drive w/ XP Home. I made a "normal" install of Ubuntu 8.10, and it runs fantastic. Only things that did not work out of the box, were the webcam and wireless. Wireless was easy to setup by installing the backports, the webcam I never bothered trying to get working. The good news is, if you use ubuntu eee, Wireless will work out of the box, as the driver is in the kernel, it did for me anyways. Not sure if the webcam will work under ubuntu eee... never tried it.

I would say to definitely give it a try. Either dual boot, or don't trash your restore partition, so if you don't like it, you can reinstall Windows XP..

Definitely just post here if there's a problem, the AAO and the Asus eee have very similar specs and hardware.

Is that available for download yet? I couldn't find anywhere to download it. Only reason I went w/ a normal Ubuntu install, is because eee ubuntu was still 8.04(might be 8.10 by now). This is probably irrelevant to most, I just like keeping things current.

It is available as a set of packages that are downloaded and installed over 8.04 or 8.10

Not as straight forward as downloading an iso, however looking at the installation instruction it does seem <cough> straightforward.

I am running kubuntu 8.04 on my eee701 and like it a lot.

Old thread bur very good stuff now available for eeepc.

I migrate from lenny with backported 2.6.32 kernel to a fresh squeeze installation : works perfect exepted grub2 bug not seeing windows primary partition.
So gave a try to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and perfect too excepted another bug in splash process on boot (turnaround found enabling frame buffer on boot).
