linux on a tosh tecra 520cdt

hello all,
quick request for direction really.... i have used various linux distros in the past all pre-installed. this is the first install i have attempted on a ageing tecra 520cdt. i have tried ubuntu and other variants i.e SuSe,tinyme, puppy, to name a few. i had install errors on many ubuntu installs in the orm of grub and Lilo, until i recently tried DSL on the beast, although being 50mB i had doubts as to whether it would fly on the machine. low and behold it worked ( no grumbles with Grub and Lilo)and runs nicely. my question being....
how can i upgrade the OS now i have a working install. i'm quire happy with DSL, but want a slightly bigger and nicer to use desktop etc...
any suggestions?

DSL is a cut down Debian if memory serves me correctly. Check /etc/apt/source.list.

Did you try Debian? That's what I have running on my daughters Tosh Tecra 8000 with 128mb of ram. I warn you though, it's still not going to be amazingly quick.

Debian with the XFCE desktop.

Aging.. what an interesting way of puttin it

Debian on a Tecra 530 CDT
Debian on Tecra 550 CDT

These how-to's are a bit long in the tooth as well..

i had knoppix 5.1 running on it via a live cd so i know it can run kde, although i have install errors. One thing i miss using dsl on the 520 is that it has no apt-get so how can i add applications to dsl to make it bigger and better? I had synaptic on knoppix 5.1 which helped, but i broke that linux machine, thats a different story

Both DSL and Knoppix are based on Debian so they can both do apt-get. .
You must enable apt-get if you want to use it in DSL..

Personally I prefer using the parent Distro to any of the derivatives, seems to cause me less grief over the long run.

Debian has available install images for Gnome (standard), KDE, and XFCE (lightweight)
