Linux on a portable drive

I have an old laptop hard drive that I have in a USB enclosure. How would I format it, so I can run Linux on the drive?

Linux normally is installed on an ext2 or ext3 filesystem. Many live CDs and installation CDs will format a drive as part of the installation. You could boot a computer from the live CD, plug in the USB drive, and install to it. Then set the computer BIOS to boot from USB first, and you should be good to go.
