Linux N00b having GAIM issues here!

OK, so I used to have windows ( right now it's having technical issues with the authentication key so it's unusable ). I used to have ICQ on it, and now I discovered the GAIM software for linux, - it supports it!
Now I have another issue: Our DSL keeps on having disconnects every 2- 5 minutes *probably* due to environmenal issues ( and they've been going on quite a while now ), so it keeps on disconnecting from GAIM.
I checked the plugin that brings you in after disconnects automaticly, problem is: it still seems like people, all of a sudden don't reply anymore for quite a while. It just doesn't reconnect me properly, and GAIM doesn't tell you WHEN I get disconnected!( I tried disconnecting and reconnecting myself from the server on purpose every few minutes, then repasting everything that I wrote since the last reply. And I don't think this is a good solution alone out of the fact that after a while I get a message that I disconnected and reconnected to often, and therefore now can't reconnect for 10 minutes ).

This issue is driving me crazy...and I ask for one thing:
anyone know how to get around this issue?

-thank you

I don't know how you could work around the issue of having connection problems with your DSL.
But, just type gaim in a terminal window and start it that way. Leave the terminal sitting next to your gaim interface and see if the terminal tells you when you get disconnected.
Not sure if this will work as I don't have gaim on this computer to try out.

Goto Help -> Debug Window. That should tell you pretty much everything you need to know about whats going on.
