Microsoft recommends that when partitioning a disk, the EFI System partition be the first partition on the disk.[10] This is not a requirement of the EFI specification itself. On Windows XP 64-Bit Edition and later, access to the EFI System partition is obtained by running the mountvol /s command.
I use MBR and BIOS it always works for me

I have installed refind but it does not work. Laptop boots directly to Windows.
I have also tried a script to change the efi boot order with no luck.

What should i do? Nothing seems to work?

Anyway i can replace the windows efi file with the refind one or grub? I mean i have mounted the efi partition in windows and i can see all folders. Is there any way i can, for example, copy the folders and files from the
refind folder into the Microsoft one? Will it work?

1. Move bootmgfw.efi from the Microsoft folder into a backup folder and rename it.
2. copy the refind_x64.efi into the Microsoft folder and rename it as bootmgfw.efi.

I hope this will trick the system that it boots windows.

wish I could help ya dude BUT, I don't deal with EFI personally -- I stay old school MBR - BIOS /dev/sda in fstab true...

I did the replacement and now it boots into refind, but not into the graphical interface. I just see the options in a dos like menu but the title is refind.

Just change it to runlevel 5 which is graphical mode

telinit 5

IF it works make it permanent by editing

/etc/inittab

putting

id:5:initdefault:

I managed to make it work by copying the other folders of refind into the windows efi tab.

So as a summary the solution to my problem (thanks to all your help and suggestions) is the following:

1. Install Linux and select to install GRUB on the Linux partition.
2. Install refind
3. Mount the EFI partition and move Microsoft/Boot bootmgfw.efi into a backup folder and rename it.
4. Copy the refind_x64.efi into the Microsoft/Boot folder and rename it as bootmgfw.efi.
5. Copy the other refind files and folders to the same Microsoft/Boot folder.
6. Restart and enjoy refind.

Again I need to THANK YOU all of you for helping me find this solution.
