Linux Mint Network Problems

Hey,

New to Linux and recently downloaded mint 15 cinnamon. Running it on my dell inspiron 1545 along with windows as well. I cannot connect to the internet using my router or plugging directly in. It does not recognize any networks and I believe I may be missing something from installation, however I do not know what. Please let me know if anyone has suggestions.

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT

link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT qlen 1000

I have tried "apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer"
-it spit back
"E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

You are going to have too change the state of your NIC to up. I haven't needed to do that on an Ubuntu based system.

Quick Google says

Sudo ifup -a

Once it says the state is up you'll probably have to manually enable dhcpcd

I entered that command and received no output. I also tried "ifup eth0" and ifconfig eth0 up". The last 2 commands gave me back,
"ifup: failed to open statefile /run/network/ifstate: Permission denied"

and

"SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted"

I have also tried installing Broadcom-kernel-source however anything I try to install from software manager will not install.
